NC BIODIESEL PRODUCERS JOINING FORCES FOR BIODIESEL DAY

PITTSBORO – North Carolina’s biodiesel producers are joining forces with farmers, non-profits, government agencies, and lawmakers for Biodiesel Day at the General Assembly on 25 March 2009. To build a sustainable biodiesel industry, the North Carolina Biodiesel Association will convene for an afternoon of biodiesel education and awareness.

It has been more than one hundred years since Rudolf Diesel’s innovative engine was the cutting edge of energy and power. From the food we eat to the clothes we wear, at some point diesel still plays a role in essentially every component of life as we know it.

“We have a target that by 2017 10% of the fuel used in North Carolina will be produced locally in the State,” said Senator John Snow. “Biodiesel is one of the only fuels currently contributing to meeting this target and we will need a significant production increase over the
next eight years to reach it.”

Biodiesel is a cleaner burning, advanced biofuel made from renewable resources, many of which are already grown and produced in North Carolina. It is domestically produced from a range of readily available products like soybean and other plant oils, fats from animals like poultry and pork, recycled restaurant grease, and waste grease. In addition, work continues on new renewable fuel sources, including algae, to bolster what is already the most diversified fuel on the planet.

“North Carolinians are feeling the pressure of the economic downturn,” said Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler. “We can stimulate our economy and boost jobs, strengthen our energy security, and help the environment by growing crops and livestock and turning some of that biomass into biodiesel.”

The biodiesel industry is built on sustainable practices, producing fuel that lowers greenhouse gas emissions and provides renewable energy. On Biodiesel Day, remember:
